Tillage, Water Harvesting, Soil Conservation and Crop Diversification: These
techniques confer both immediate and long term benefits for the farmers. They are trained
in conservation farming practices and also receive inputs to help the season.
They will receive: Seed packages of the following crops: Sorghum, Cowpeas, Groundnuts Fertilizer pack of the following: 4x 50kg Lime, 2x 50kg Compound D, 1x 25kg Urea. Our training of the farmers in conservation farming, included an awareness of the transmission, prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. It is one of the greatest killers in Zambia, and yet many people are totally ignorant on the subject. Many of the people believe myths about the disease. These myths aid in spreading it. The training sessions lasted for two weeks, two days at each village, one day for HIV /AIDS and the other for conservation farming. We taught an average of 200 people per day. Our reason for combining the conservation farming with the HIV training is due to the fact that, when there is drought there is not enough food for the people to eat. They become more prone to disease and also rely on prostitution to get some food, resulting in the spread of HIV. On the other hand, when someone has AIDS and dies there are fewer people to plant and produce food. The people will have a severe shortage once again. So the cycle continues. In teaching the people about HIV/ AIDS we were able to bring in Bible principles and teach them what it says in contrast to what the world teaches. Nowadays the world teaches that you can do as you please---just use condoms. On the other hand we were teaching them that the Bible makes it clear that the Lord sanctified marriage but will judge adulterers. The scientific gardening students and the lifestyle educator students all worked together on this project to make it a success. With these projects we have had the privilege of not only teaching the people about the set subjects but we could bring Jesus to them at the same time. |
